The Psychology of Faith in Jesus
Searching for answers can be a thing any person experiences in their lifetime. This search may come as a result of different experiences (because our thoughts and perceptions are as a result of various experiences we have had over time). People take various approaches to finding these answers and end up with all kinds of results, both ugly and satisfying. In our lifetime, we all want to feel like we belong; I mean, why else would a concept like 'peer-pressure' exist? This need is not one that sprung up out of the blues, as it has been from the time of creation. Many of us in the journey of growth, get to a point where we question the reason for our existence. We ask questions like, what am I created for? Why am I here? Yet, many have still not found the answers.
What can we really say is the problem? What really is the essence of living if we cannot be of impact to people around us? I heard someone say, " Purpose is not a destination but a journey", which pushed me to think of how true that statement is. Why? Because the truth is, we come to different places in our existence where, as we grow, our needs, desires, thought patterns, social status, all change; and the same set of people we associated with, may not be the same ones we evolve with. It's the nature of human existence. We have all also been exposed to different environments that shape our perception and program our minds.
So, what questions can we sit to ask ourselves? We must first believe that as beings, were created for a reason. Also understand that you cannot afford to get frustrated trying to chase 'one' reason/ purpose. Your growth process and seasons of life will demand different things of you at different times according to how much value and substance you have acquired. it is now left to you in those seasons to guide those behind you who have not yet gotten to that space.
We are created to serve and be of service to others. The uniqueness comes when people now have to serve according to the ability and capacity they were created with. Now, be careful not to belittle what ability you have. You just need to refine and build that gift. Make it richer. If you are reading this and thinking, "this is a lot of work", then you're right, it is but how can the work be made easier? We need to look at people who have been around longer than we have, who have gone ahead of us and done it successfully; to tap from their wisdom. This journey of discovery can definitely not be taken without wisdom from our predecessors and of course faith; belief in a higher power; trusting that He has the blueprint.
What now is Psychology and how is it related to this faith journey? Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behavior. It seeks to understand how individuals think, feel, and behave, both individually and in social contexts. Psychology explores various aspects of human experience, including perception, cognition, emotion, motivation, personality, development, and mental health. It involves the unfolding of capabilities and potentialities, influenced by varying factors. I believe some of these concepts can be explored in the light of our faith walk and experiences. What best stories/ characters to explore than the ones in the bible?
Having said all of this, I'm going to circle back to the main focus, The Psychology of faith. I would be putting out a few posts, tying both concepts together and drawing lessons from some of these stories that talk about both concepts of faith in Jesus and a few Psychological concepts/ ideas. I hope that this ends up being an interesting and insightful read for you. Cheers!
